The event

The increasing interest and demand in bioenergy and bio-products has led to an increased interest in expanding the supply of biomass available for use with implications on land use, food versus fuel trade-offs etc. Sidestream biomass resources can facilitate and guarantee a steady and reliable supply of feedstock for the industry. Therefore sidestreams especially from agricultural and forestry primary and secondary biomass resources are very important in the context of the development of a sustainable Bioeconomy in the frame of a Circular Economy. This is especially true as these sidestream resources are "naturally" available, of non-concurrence to food or feed and offer valorization potential higher than just their energy content.

Many research projects are dealing with this potential. Actual research is more focusing on developing technics for achieving higher value materials (like functional materials, chemicals etc.) rather than pure energy.

More and more practical examples on materials based on sidestream biomass and 2nd generation bioenergy applications exist on the markets which are testimonials for the technical feasibility and marketability of these new resources
