A New Approach to Poultry Inspection: SC-F

Inspection Systems

Poultry is one of the most sensitive products: strict hygiene, high quality standards and, at the same time, the pressure to be efficient. High line speeds, a shortage of skilled workers and increasing demands on safety and traceability call for comprehensive, smart inspection. The SC-F from Wipotec combines state-of-the-art X-ray technology, precise checkweighing, hygienic design and AI-supported processes in a compact unit. In an interview, Jakob Limlei (Head of Business Development & Key Accounts) explains how the system sets new standards – from precise bone detection and optional grading to vision testing for colour deviations (e.g. blood stains).

What specific advantages does the SC-F offer when detecting bones and foreign objects in poultry products – especially in high-performance operations?

Jakob Limlei: Bones are particularly difficult to detect because they have very low absorption compared to metal or glass. The SC-F offers the ideal solution here: With our unique DFXr and MFXr sensor technologies, we achieve a resolution of 0.1 mm. These are optimised for weakly absorbing materials such as bone. Even at high throughput rates of up to 200 product units per minute and lane, detection accuracy remains at the highest level. This enables us to provide reliable inspection even in the most demanding production environments.

What are the benefits of combining MFXr sensor technology and integrated checkweighing in quality management?

Jakob Limlei: MFXr technology represents a new generation of X-ray sensor technology. Not only does it deliver high resolution, it also reliably differentiates between genuine foreign objects and non-critical structures in the product. In combination with the high-precision checkweigher – with a weighing accuracy of 0.5 g in the range from 30 to 1,500 g – this creates a system that performs checking and evaluation in a single step. Integrated grading* is particularly valuable here: Products can be classified with maximum accuracy based on their measured weight. For quality management, this means: Less effort, greater transparency and maximum product safety.

Note: The term "integrated grading" means that the system automatically sorts products according to their weight – directly in the system.

How hygienic is the system in daily use?

Jakob Limlei: The SC-F system has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of food processing. The entire housing is made of high-quality stainless steel (1.4301), and the IP69K* protection class guarantees absolute leak tightness against high-pressure and hot water cleaning. The product area is free of dead spaces and designed in such a way that residues cannot accumulate. The result: a system that can be completely cleaned in just a few steps – safely, quickly and efficiently.

In addition, the SC-F can be easily integrated into existing production lines. It is available as a single-track or double-track system and comes with an ejector as standard. The system therefore offers not only maximum hygiene, but also maximum flexibility in line planning – whether it's for new projects or retrofits during ongoing operations.

How flexibly can the system be adjusted to different product formats and packaging types – and how does AI-supported training work?

Jakob Limlei: Product changes are now part of everyday life in food production. This makes it all the more important to have a system that can be adapted quickly and easily to new requirements. The SC-F offers an AI-supported teach-in function for this purpose: New products are automatically analysed and the optimal inspection parameters are set. Up to 100 items can be stored in the internal memory – expansion is possible at any time upon request. This significantly reduces set-up times and makes the system particularly attractive for lines with frequently changing batches.

How does the SC-F ensure a low false rejection rate while maintaining reliable detection?

Jakob Limlei: False positive rejections cost money – especially in the case of high-quality poultry products. The Wipotec inspection system uses artificial intelligence to automatically optimise inspection parameters. The sensor technology learns to distinguish between genuine hazards and harmless product features. This allows us to minimise the incorrect rejection rate without compromising product safety. The combination of precise X-ray technology, intelligent software and finely tuned mechanics ensures maximum efficiency.

What additional testing options are available and for which applications are they particularly suitable?

Jakob Limlei: As a supplement to classic X-ray inspection, we also offer an optional integrated vision function. This allows visual deviations such as blood spots or colour irregularities to be reliably detected – for example, in natural poultry parts. This visual inspection is particularly valuable when, in addition to internal quality, external appearance also plays a role – for example, in premium product ranges.

In your opinion, what are the three strongest arguments in favour of the SC-F?

Jakob Limlei: Firstly: outstanding detection performance thanks to our DFXr and MFXr sensor technologies. They have been specially developed for low-absorbance materials such as poultry bones and reliably detect bone sizes from 2.0 mm.
Secondly: the unique combination of X-ray inspection, high-precision checkweigher, automatic rejection of foreign objects and optional grading. This is available as a single-track or dual-track system and can be fully integrated into the production line.
And thirdly: the intelligent, AI-based training tool that independently analyses new products, sets optimal inspection parameters and documents the results. Food manufacturers therefore opt for a system that combines product safety, efficiency and comprehensive quality documentation at the highest level – and delivers impressive results in the long term.
