About Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Hensel
The veterinary surgeon, microbiologist and hygienist Professor Dr Dr Andreas Hensel has been President of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) since 2003. Its foundation was one of the structural political responses to the BSE crisis. As an independent higher federal authority that is not subject to directives in its risk assessment, communication and research, the BfR provides policy advice to the Federal Government on consumer health protection. By identifying, recognising and characterising risks, it protects human health. Its legal mandate also includes science-based risk communication as well as social science research on risk perception. Every day, the BfR gathers new experience in crisis coordination and communication in socio-politically relevant fields of knowledge, for example EHEC, dioxin, salmonella, glyphosate, new genetic engineering, fipronil, microplastics, nanoparticles and smoking.
