"Waterleau helps potato processor Clarebout to accelerate Sustainable Production with a Cutting-Edge Wastewater Treatment Plant for New French Fry Production Facility"

Waterleau is proud to announce its pivotal role in the implementation of a new, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant for Clarebout's latest potato processing facility in Dunkirk, France. Clarebout, a premier potato processor and global supplier of frozen potato products, relied on Waterleau expertise for the construction of this advanced environmental technology project, underscoring a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. The new treatment plant was built in a record time and is operational from November 2023.

Established in 1988, Clarebout has grown to become a key player in the global market, exporting its high-quality frozen potato products to over 120 countries. Sourcing potatoes from Germany, Belgium, and the north of France, the company has embarked on an expansion to meet the increasing worldwide demand for French fries.

The new Dunkirk facility reflects Clarebout's ongoing efforts to enhance production capabilities while maintaining environmental stewardship. Waterleau's design for the wastewater treatment plant incorporates stable and proven treatment technologies and is engineered to accommodate future capacity increases. The treatment process includes a comprehensive approach to managing general debris, fats & oils, and grey starch, followed by anaerobic and aerobic treatment phases.

A highlight of our project is the installation of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor, designed to valorize the organic load in the bio-effluent. The anaerobic process not only treats wastewater efficiently but also converts it into biogas. The methantion of the organic load significantly reduces the Clarebout CO2 footprint too. The anaerobic reactor is the biggest UASB built by Waterleau.

The construction of this new wastewater treatment plant marks a remarkable technical achievement, a testament to the collaborative engineering expertise of both Waterleau and Clarebout teams and within a very limited project lead time.

Additionally, the wastewater treatment plant benefits from cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Through Waterleau's SmartLab software suite, the system leverages real-time data analysis and process optimization, integrating local control systems with cloud-based technologies. This ensures operational efficiency and exemplifies Waterleau's expertise in applying smart solutions to environmental challenges.

Waterleau is excited to contribute to Clarebout's expansion with a project that not only meets the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability but also sets a new benchmark in wastewater treatment within the agro-industry. This project underscores our commitment to delivering innovative environmental solutions that support our clients' growth while preserving our planet for future generations.
