Climate protection made by SPH: Innovative high-temperature industrial heat pumps save energy, costs and CO2

Sustainability and cost reductions are not just strategic goals for industrial companies, but are increasingly important in order to remain competitive. A cost-saving and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels is the utilisation of industrial waste heat. For many applications, however, this has so far been difficult or impossible to realise, as the required temperatures could not be generated at a sufficient level. However, the Overath-based company SPH Sustainable Process Heat GmbH has developed a solution to this problem with its innovative ThermBooster high-temperature industrial heat pump.

SPH's high-temperature industrial heat pump generates process heat

Company founders and managing directors Dr Tim Hamacher and Andreas Mück came up with the idea for their product several years ago. The two have known each other professionally for a long time and have more than 50 years of combined experience in the automotive and refrigeration technology sectors. Both are also ecologically minded in their private lives and endeavour to live in a largely climate-neutral way. With this in mind, they developed an industrial heat pump that makes existing waste heat available as process heat. "Especially in times of climate change, we need a new technology for CO2-free heat above 100 degrees. And we have found the solution for industry," reports Andreas Mück.

ThermBooster generates temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius

In 2020, the two founded SPH GmbH and developed the modular system with a special compressor: the ThermBooster. It is capable of generating steam or water at temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius and can be easily integrated into any production environment. "The heat pump itself is a proven technology," explains Hamacher. "But the compressor for this high temperature in combination with the corresponding refrigerants is a real innovation." The company has already registered three patents for the technology. The first heat pumps have already been delivered: they are located in the Dutch production facility of the Israeli company UBQ Materials, which produces bio-based recycled plastic, where they will continuously supply the drying process with high-temperature heat. The third ThermBooster is about to be delivered - demand is high.
